Begging a Natural Question

questionIt is reported following the devastating recent hail storm in Burgundy that:

“the president of the Regional Council, François Patriat, has said that the local government is once again looking at aerial defence measures such as cloud seeding….Cloud-seeding is the process where dry ice or silver iodide are put in to clouds to weaken storms, and make precipitation fall as rain rather than hail.”

It begs the question, were this to be done, would so-called “Natural” Wine producers in Burgundy have the right to call their resulting wine “Natural”?

Absolutely horrible to see the devastation of my beloved Savigny, Pommard and Volnay. My heart goes out to each and every vigneron having to try and pick up the pieces….again, and make the best of what’s left. Crushing. That being said, if cloud seeding happens then the resulting wine probably shouldn’t be labeled as “Natural” even though no one has a friggin answer to what “Natural” wine is. I’m guessing natural is all up in their faces right now so I won’t be…..

If we concede that harsher weather patterns are due to manmade climate change, then perhaps no wine or other agricultural product can be considered natural?

I think yes, much more, in any way, than wine added with any type of substance to modify acidity, tans, alcohol, softness, or to reach the ‘right’ fashion smell

I feel that this would become more detrimental to the grapes than severe storms. Harmful chemicals are used in the process and it can often have unintended effects on weather patterns since nature will always try to maintain an equilibrium. So for me, it’s not a matter of labeling something as natural or not, but instead its the unintended consequences on both the grapes, terroir, and environment.
