Great Wine Values…All Six

Is there anything better than a GREAT wine value. Doesn’t matter how you find it. But when you come across that wine that is really wonderful and can be paid for with the cash in your pocket wine lovers tend to get excited.

The problem is that it is hard to try all those lower cost wines out there in search of great value. And this is of course why we rely on wine critics and wine magazines.

Well, I like a good value too. So I thought I’d go looking for those GREAT values likely to still be in the stores that had been identified by wine critics. I went to Robert Parker and The Wine Spectator and looked for GREAT VALUE wines that had been reviewed in the past 12 months. I was looking for wines that were $10 or less and given 90 points or more.

To put things in perspective, in those 12 months Robert Parker reviewed 130 wines of $10 or less. The Wine Spectator reviewed a whopping 997 wines over the past 12 months that cost $10 or less.

I FOUND A GRAND TOTAL OF 6 WINES THAT FIT MY "VALUE CRITERIA"

SIX WINES!:

2002 Castano
Hecula-Spain

90 Points, $10

2001 Terragens Romio

Terragens—Emilia Romagna, Italy

90 Points, $10

2002 Capcanes Mas Donis Barrica
Capcanes-Tarragona, Spain

90 Points, $10

2003 Panarroz

Panarroz-Jumilla, Spain

90 Points, $8

2003 Yalumba Riesling Y Series

Yalumba-South Australia, Australia

90 Points, $10

2001 Columbia Crest Two Vines Shiraz

Columbia Valley, Washington

90 Points, $9

What’s wrong with this picture? Is it simple economics? Is it simply impossible to make great wine when the producer’s price for the wine leaves them little room for profit? Are the Wine Spectator critics and Robert Parker just too stingy with their accolades?
