When Cliches Come True: MADD is Mad

maddRegarding the effort to finally privatize the commerce of alcohol in Pennsylvania and take it to the Free Market and out of the hands of government, the folks at Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) said:

“The CDC concluded that privatization of alcohol sales will result in a reduction in the enforcement of sales regulations including enforcement of the minimum legal drinking age. Therefore, policies or legislation transferring state alcohol control to private control are counter to MADD’s mission of eliminating drunk driving and preventing underage drinking.”

If this were true one would then expect Pennsylvania to have the lowest rate of drunk driving incidents in the country, save perhaps Utah. But they don’t.

More than half the states have a lower rate of drunk driving incidents per 100,000 residents. Imagine my surprise that MADD got it wrong. The fact is, MADD is mad.

But wait, there is more. In praising the MADD announcement opposing privatization in Pennsylvania, Wendell W. Young IV, President, UFCW Local 1776, and Chairman of the UFCW PA Wine & Spirits Council said:

“Obviously, the governor is not listening. He is just completely out of touch with working Pennsylvanians and he has decided to ignore the experts.”

Well, either Mr. Young IV is also mad, or the 61% of Pennsylvanians who support Privatization of the liquor trade in Pennsylvania aren’t “working” Pennsylvanians.
Don’t trust people or organizations who will lie to your face. In other words, don’t trust MADD and don’t trust Mr. Young IV.

The union in Pennsylvania doesn’t want privatization because their members will lose their jobs, so (like the wholesalers in other states) they simply lie in an attempt to promote their own interests. It’s just like when Pennsylvania decided to open up some of their stores on Sunday. There were many pickets protesting the sale of alcohol on “the Lord’s Day”, but in reality they weren’t churchgoers specifically, but members of the union who just didn’t want to work on Sunday.

MADD is a neo-prohibitionist group that will do anything it can to hurt people’s efforts to buy alcohol.

And the reason there are relatively few DUIs in Utah is because 60% of the population doesn’t drink as a result of religious prohibitions, so the statistics are faulty.

Nice article, Tom. I will never forgot when the government liquor stores in Ontario were asking if I wanted to add a donation to MADD with each of my purchases. Talk about gall.

The union doesn’t care about its members, they care about its members dues. Privatization will CREATE jobs, and higher paying ones at that!

As for MADD, I vowed a long time ago to stop taking the solicitation call because it was too easy to win an argue with the person on the other end if the phone line. I will extend that policy here.
