Mailing List Wines: Worth it?

Envelope1
Do the mailing list only wines skip by the competitive marketplace by setting an arbitrary price on the wines that are never exposed to the value conscious wholesalers and retailers and restaurant buyers who participate in the open market for wines?

It’s an interesting question that is explored by Dave McIntyre over at "Dave McIntyre’s Wine Line".

If the wine is never offered in the general market place then the buyers have no idea if the wine is worth what the winery is asking. Right?

I’m not so sure. Wine buyers have a number of choices they can make. If a mailing list-only wine is over prices, it simply will not sell out, a sure sign the winery overestimates the market for a wine of a certain quality, price and production.

Add to this the fact that there is near complete market transparency today with the likes of Winebid.com and WineSearcher.com. Chances are, if you want to get your hands on a mailing list only wine, you can probably find it.

Dave’s post is a very interesting one. Read!
