From the “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up” Department

unbelievableIn the “YOU CAN’T MAKE THIS STUFF UP” department: The Center for Alcohol Policy is now accepting nominations for a new Leadership in Alcohol Regulation Award…The inaugural award is designed to recognize the work of alcohol regulators who oversee the alcohol industry and promote public safety”

Nice. Who doesn’t like awards. But in this case, it’s important to note who is giving the award. From The Center for Alcohol Policy’s website:

“The Center for Alcohol Policy was founded by the National Beer Wholesalers Association and receives funding from America’s beer distributors and others interested in exploring, researching and expanding education on alcohol regulation.”

So, let’s see if I have this right. The regulated will give an award to those they believe regulate them best.

If there is an organization that has done more to stifle competition in the alcohol beverage industry, done more to attempt to restrict consumer access to wine and done more to buy protection for their protected place in the alcohol beverage industry than the National Beer Wholesalers Association, I don’t know it.

So, now, the beer wholesalers are going to give awards to those who do the best job of regulating them. I can just hear the presentation speech to be given at the upcoming awards presentation:

“The Center for Alcohol Policy has worked mightily to help protect the commercial interests of beer, wine and spirit wholesalers everywhere against the insidious encroachment of free trade doctrine, the efforts of consumers to purchase the products they want without paying wholesalers and modernization of the sale and distribution of alcohol. And no one has carried out the policies to this effect with greater zeal and concern for wholesalers’ interests than….”

You can’t make this shit up!
